The Most Popular Hacking Tool Doesn't Work on iOS 17.4 and Later Versions
Many of you may not be familiar with Cellebrite, an Israeli tool used to unlock smartphones, whether they are Android or iOS. For instance, this tool was used to unlock the phone of the Trump attacker in just 40 minutes. Some police departments have even made videos demonstrating how it works. Almost nothing is safe from it.
All the latest iPhones still cannot be unlocked by Cellebrite.
According to information from TechSpot, Apple has managed to ensure that phones with iOS 17.4 or later do not succumb to Cellebrite. However, not everything is a reason to celebrate, as there is currently ongoing research to bypass the security protocols of these versions.
Old Devices Remains Vulnerable
This data highlights the importance of having the latest security patches installed, at least in Apple's case. According to the source, Cellebrite cannot access the majority of iPhones running iOS 17.1 to iOS 17.3.1, although iPhone XR and iPhone 11 models can still be unlocked due to hardware vulnerabilities.
iPhone 12 and newer models are still being investigated. It's also worth noting that Apple has very little fragmentation compared to other companies. According to the information, 87% of iPhones released in the past four years are using some version of iOS 17.
